Dr. Love was on hand to rent the establishment, and" Mr. Ded- man, to sare himself from conscription, ' waa compelled to rent to Love and Senabaugh and ben print the paper for thenv. .'The next-issue of tbe paper hoisted the name t)f Yancs, tbe Destruotive candidate for Governor. There - are at least fwZe arrant falsehoods in jthe above article, brief as it is. "3e say, this, not for political effect,, but with chagrin arid" mortification. "VYe are ashamed to think, yea to Inoio. that wehave one in our midst, a native North Carolinian, blessed with talent and fine attainments, who is so lost to every sense oi rectitude, as to otter, in a single ar ticle of a few line, such a series of willful and de liberate perversions of fact. ' - . VT. W. Ilolden is the author of the above ex'tract His assertions are not less base and false, than the mma tnat conceived them. We are utterly con founded. He does not give the above as information he has received,as hearsay, but he launches these unfounded statements upon theLpublic, as being true beyond question and as if he neither feared or ex pected any refuta'tion. . Has the man lost all regard for truth? 'Does he write in his dreams ? Is he bewildered? Has despair laid hold upon and de throned his faculties ? Has reason fled, left th tene ment so often prostituted for political purposes, or is he in the language of Holy Writ, possessed. ' -; The language of Mr. Holden is so absolutely false, as to be wholly incomprehensible to us. - Dr.:W. L. Love is not a Surgeon in the Confederate service. DrfX. P. Sen3abangh is not a Surgeon in the State sertice. We do not hold any . office, except one the good people of Transylvania gave us about the time Mr. Holden voted North Carolina out of the Union. We have no office in expectancy ; we have asked for none, nor has any been piomjsed us. Hence the as sertion is false, that u the possession of office" has influenced us many way. Jiut in this one instance, we can in part look over Mr. HoWen's deviation from the. truth, when we reflect that he has been Editor 'afid scavenger, of the Democratic party for nearly twenty years, for the shadow pf office. As he has been for half a lifetime, so he thiuks all others. But when he says we are a " red hot Destruc tive" this isnot a simple untruth but a lie without mitigation. It is such from wbencesoever it comes, now, hitherto, and henceforth. After Mr. Holden thus falsely charges us without cause, except to accomplish his own selfish purposes, with being a Destructive, he goes on, in two- sen tences which we have italicised, and utters no less than eight other separate and distinct falsehoods. u Oh my propbetie soul, my uncle-! Was the like ever heard before?" But we must here make room for Mr. Dedman, whom Mr. Holden has very uncere-. monipusly lugged into this office, having previously but erroneously, branded him and his own. , Now let us have Mr. Dedman V note. He is a quiet, un obtrusive man, whose veracity has never been doubted, and glories, as does your humble servant, in being a " true conservative." ' Times Orrics, June 27th, 1864. Mr. Wu. Dedman, Sir I find the above extract In the North Carolina Standard of June 22d, 1864. The language is that of W. ,W Ilolden, the would-be Governor ofTforth Caiolina. I ak yen if the words quoted are true. Yours, truly, WM. L. LOVE, Editor. ;. ' ' At Office, June 28th, 1864. D W. L. Love Sir: You ask me if tho quoted words in the aboye extract, taken from the North Carolina St aw dcrd, of tbe 22d instant, 'are true.' I. answer they are not. ' . 1. The enrollingDfficer did not 'notify me' some four or fiyo weeks ago, 'that my 'paper must change its conserva tive tone.' 2. The enrolling officer, did not 'notify' me, that unless there was a change in the tone of my paper, it would 'be auprressed. ' 3.i Tho enrolling flicer did not 'notify' me, that unless this change w as made, that 1 would be 'arrested.' 4. Tho enrolling olflegr did not 'notify' me, that unless I made this change, I would be 'sent to camp as a con script.' 5. You were not 'on hand to rent the establishment,' at the time referred to. It was six or eight weeks after en rolling day, when you first named a trade to me. 6. I was not 'compelled to rent or sell to yon, in order to save myself from conscription I had been permanent ly exempted some two months before we traded. 7. I was not 'compelled' to 'print the paper for'you. 8Y In my opinion, Dr. Sensabaugh knew nothing of the trade, while in progress. There was no 'force' used in this transaction, to my knowledge, but I entered into it of my own free will and aocord. : f Yours respectfully, etc., . I ( - WM. DEDMAN. The forcible suppression by aXlonfederate ofiBeer. of a conservative jouinai." This is one more, and an unmitigated lie. Mr. Dedman says, he traded of his own free will and accord. We say so tooi Mr. Dedman aod ourself were the sole' parties to the trade". We both say there was not force. Mr. Holdenjwho was 250 miles away says there was. Some one has spoken falsely Who is it ? ,Whom will you believe ? Who ought to "know, Mr. Ded man and ourself who were present, or Mr. Holden who was absent ! But we are wearied wearied recounting the many untruths Mr. Holden has compelled - us in ; self de fence to notice And when we reflect that this ar ticle is in a few hours," to be laid before a christian community and fall into the hands of the gentle, "the good, and the virtuous, we feel predisposed to rev coil from what is an imperitive duty. This article is simply defensive and unavoidable on pur part, and Mr. Holden will learn in process o' time that "the men of the mountain country," whom he has thus attempted to bamboozle, "are too high minded and too independent " to be misled at the August elec tion by his wholesale misrepresentations and slander. !
